Accommodation and Centre Resources
Oosterland consist out of 10 house units and accommodates
120 children. Each house unit has in-living house parents
who are responsible for the caring and day-to-day running
of the household. Two of the 10 house-units accommodates babies
and toddlers. Oosterland is the only childrens home caring
for babies in the region.
Oosterland has its own crèche, WOEL-EN-WERK, where toddlers
are prepared for school and assisted to address educational
shortcomings due to past experiences.
Our clinic looks after all medical needs and ensures that
high health and hygiene standards are maintained.
A central kitchen prepares the cooked meal for the day while
the lighter meals are prepared at the different house units.
Food are delivered at the different houses allowing meals
to be enjoyed as a "family".
A central laundry makes sure that clothes are washed and ironed
on a daily basis, ensuring that our children always look tidy
and cared for.

Discipline
Positive disciplinary measures are used where focus is placed
on acceptable behaviour and strengths rather than on punishment
and unacceptable behaviour. Children are empowered to take responsible
decisions and supported to understand that any actions has a consequence.
Strict routine and procedures are followed in the houses to ensure
that a baseline for rules and control is guaranteed.
Children are motivated to participate in decision making, thus
empowering them to become responsible and confident adults. Continuous
training is provided for staff to assist them in the caring of
children under difficult circumstances.

Education
Education is the basis for any future and is seen as a priority
in the caring for children. School attendance is also compulsory
to receive subsidy from the government. Our children attend 11 schools
in the community. Priority is given to allow children to attend
all school activities, including sport, culture, camps, etc.
Oosterland holds their own prize-giving and concert in October where all 120 children receives certificates for their strengths and accomplishments.

Religion
Oosterland Youth Centre was established as a Dutch Reformed
Children’s Home and is currently still viewing religion as
the direction indicator for our future. 3 Church denominations are responsible for the spiritual needs of our children
and personnel, including Sunday School and other church activities.
Children, above 12 years, can choose the denomination they would like to attend.

Family Re-unification Services
The transformation process steered by the Department of Welfare
stipulates that services and efforts should be directed towards
re-uniting families and not to keep children in institutions
as a long term option. Specific services are rendered to empower
parents and children to be re-united if possible.
Children visit their parents every second week-end and holidays
if the circumstances allows it. The majority of our children
do not visit their parents and visits week-end or holiday
parents in the community.
